The NFL Week 6 Recap

Joshua Huber (joshua.huber@sseonline.org)                             10/17/06
SSEOnline.org Senior Writer

The Cincinnati Bengals lost a tight one to Tampa Bay 14-13, and it just so happens the final drive of the Bucs, the winning drive, had a bad call. I'm not an advocate for wining loser bad mouthing the ref type of people, but the 3rd down roughing the passer call, while Justin Smith was pulling the TB quarterback to the ground while he STILL POSSESSED THE BALL was complete ludicrous. That immediately led to a last minute TD pass that was reviewed by the booth, and shouldn't have been overturned, and a Buc victory. Tampa Bay won its first game of the season, while Cincinnati drops their second straight, to fall to 3-2, and remains a half game behind Baltimore for 1st in the AFC North.

The Baltimore Ravens lost to the Carolina Panthers, who are turning up the heat in recent weeks, 23-21 to fall to 4-2. The Ravens, like the New Orleans Saints who beat Philly 27-24 to improve to 5-1, are a suspect good record team. They dont seem to have all the pieces of the pie together to have a good record, yet they keep winning.

The Arizona Cardinals behind Matt Leinarts 2nd pro start, collapsed in the 2nd half against the Chicago Bears after leading 23-3 in the 3rd. Maybe it was Monday Night's curse that got to them, or maybe they have too many Michigan State Spartans on the team, but they collapsed. 2 fumble returns for touchdowns by the Bears defense, and Devin Hester sealed it with an 82 yard punt return (the rookie's 2nd this season) late in the 4th quarter for the Bears to win 24-23, and move to a perfect 6-0 on the season.

The San Diego Chargers improved to 4-1 on the young season after devastating the SF 49ers 48-19. It looked like a complete opposite of the SuperBowl battle the 2 teams shared in the mid-1990's, when the 49ers won big. My question is: What happened to those 2 decades of SF 49er greatness? Were there some crazy front office changes, or just the coaching changes over the past several seasons? Something happened over there, and they need to get a grip on it.

The NY Jets got a much needed win and upped their record to 3-3, defeating the Miami Dolphins 20-17, as Chris Brown rushed for 127 yards for the Dolphins, but it wasn't enough to bring them all the way back. As much as the Jets needed that win, the Pittsburgh Steelers got a much needed win as well, maybe even a bigger one, being that they are the NFL's defending champs and they had only won once this season (lol, against those lousy Dolphins), as they defeated the KC Cheifs 45-7. Maybe this game shouldnt have been that much of a blowout, but the Steelers I believe were just taking out some serious aggression on the happless Cheifs.

Terrell Owens caught 3 touchdown passes and added 45 yards receiving in a Dallas Cowboy 34-6 rout of the Houston Texans. Drew Bledsoe threw for 168 yards, and the Cowboy defense did their job on Sunday afternoon, holding Houston to only 34 yards rushing in the game. They sure couldve used Reggie Bush in this one. lol.

So after 3 weeks of this NFL season, here are the top and bottom 3:

TOP 3

#1 Indianaplois (5-0) - Even though they had a bye, they are still number 1. That shouldnt penalize a team now should it? They have the Bears breathing down their necks though.

#2 Chicago (6-0) - They had no business winning that game on Monday night, but THEY DID. They have a good strong defense, and defense wins titles. They would not have been able to pull that off on a team like the Colts though.

#3 New Orleans (5-1) - I'm going to roll with these guys in the top 3 until they prove to me they shouldnt be here. They are upstarts, they are overated in every way, but they ARE winning, and that's key.

BOTTOM 3

#30 Miami (1-5) - When you make a valiant effort and still lose, YOU STILL LOSE!

#31 Oakland (0-5) - They played the Denver Broncos tough. They just couldnt generate any offense, and come to think of it, nobody has this season against Denver, so they move up.

#32 Arizona (1-5) - I always said until Oakland wins, they are down here, but after seeing the collapse I saw on Monday night, these guys should take a week, and think about what it feels like to be in last.

There are plenty of things I can sit here and talk about, but I will throw some opinionated facts out there.

- The Cincinnati Bengals need to think about not letting the rice sit on the back burner for too long, because in the end, ur gonna get burnt! Throw the ball Carson, it was very obvious that Rudi wasn't going to break a 40 yard TD run!

- Ok, so the Baltimore Ravens are 4-2. I said the same thing 2 weeks ago when they were 4-0, and that is: They arent very good. Give it up Raven fans, they arent going to out run Cincy for the Div Title.

- Pittsburgh will not make the playoffs. They may have beaten the Cheifs 45-7, but they wont do that again this season to anyone.

- I keep saying that the Saints are going to collapse, and they havent yet. They have had opportunities to do so, but haven't used those. I wish them the best of luck down there, and I'll see you guys in Miami. Down with the Bears.
