The NFL Week 3 Recap

Joshua Huber (joshua.huber@sseonline.org)                             09/26/06
SSEOnline.org Senior Writer

The Cincinnati Bengals returned to Pittsburgh with clear intentions Sunday. To prove who is the best team in the AFC North, and Cincy came out on top, 28-20. The Cincinnati Bengals move to 3-0 on the young season, and a full 2 games in front of 1-2 Pittsburgh, who is struggling out of the gate.

Of course the Baltimore Ravens are 3-0 as well, but they are still an unproven 3-0 at this point, and have yet to hit a rough stretch in the season. Beating the Cleveland Browns on a last minute field goal isn't exactly a dominating win. The Indianapolis Colts also moved to 3-0 with their rather impressive 21-14 win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team I had penned to upset the Colts. The Jags in my mind boast the leagues best defense. Say what you say about the Chicago Bears, but Jacksonville is the defense.

Speaking of the Bears, they won 19-16 over a very uninspired Minnesota Vikings squad, (to move to 3-0 also) that if they (Vikings) were a team like the Bengals or Colts, could have easily put up 30 on this team.

There were no big shockers this week, but if all the NY Giants had to do was play 4th quarters this year, they would go undefeated!! They are a 1-2 team that has put up 44 points in 2 weeks in the 4th quarter alone, leading to interesting endings. The Denver Broncos flexed their defensive muscles as well as they held Tom Brady and the mighty (lol) Patriots to 7 points in a 17-7 loss. The game was just plain ugly, but someone had to win. Why not be the Broncos again?

So after 3 weeks of this NFL season, here are the top and bottom 3:

#1 Cincinnati (3-0) - I may be a bit biased, but who doesn't have these guys in the top 2 anyway?

#2 Indianapolis (3-0) - Ok, it's a toss up for the top spot, but I think this is the year Cincinnati goes the distance. Besides, how can you have a team at #1 who consistently chokes in every playoff push?

#3 Seattle (3-0) - Yeah they gave up 27 4th quarter points to the Giants, and have lost their all-star running back for a few weeks, but these guys were screwed out of a SuperBowl win last year, and I feel for them!!

BOTTOM 3

#30 Tennessee (0-3) - It's time to get Vince Young some playing time, your season is basically over anyway, right? Right?

#31 Detroit (0-3) - The Lions had the perfect opportunity to beat a very bad Packer team at home, and couldn't do it. Matter of fact, gave up 31 points to a very depleted offense, with a (bless his soul), over aged quarterback with no gas left in the tank. Give these guys a bye till next season, put them out of their misery.

#32 Oakland (0-2) - If Art Shell wants his tenure at Oakland to last longer this time, he needs to find a way to win. With the talent on that team, they should be 10 game winners every year. They have Cleveland up next, and if they lose that one, here comes your #1 pick in the 2007 NFL Draft.

There are plenty of things I can sit here and talk about, but I will throw some opinionated facts out there.

- Cleveland Browns fans are great fans, but get over it, your team is VERY bad, and if you don't know this by now, you aren't a real football fan. You guys hate the Steelers almost as much as Bengals fans hate them. Believe me they hate Cincy worse than you now too.......................................unless you can upset them this year.

- The Baltimore Ravens' offense has not improved at all this year. Steve McNair is a great person, but he is washed up as a quarterback. Why do you think the Titans picked Volek over him? The running isnt the same as 3 years ago, and wont be that way again for a long time. Yes, they are 3-0 right now, but I plead with you to still expect no better than 7-9 this year.

- The refs won the SuperBowl for Pittsburgh last year, every knows that. The cool thing about that is they will not be back to prove anyone wrong, because they wont even make the playoffs this year!! If 2 teams from the North get in, it'll be the Ravens at maybe 8-8, even though I think 7-9 is more likely. The Steelers will win 7 or 8 games tops.

- The New Orleans Saints played a very spirited game against the Atlanta Falcons Monday night, in the Saints return to the Superdome for the first time since the hurricane season of 2005. One sad thing about that is.............the Saints may be 3-0, but like the Ravens, that 3-0 is very deceptive. Take the spirit out of Monday night, and the Falcons win that game hands down, and take the Browns out of their week one slot, and this team may just be 1-2. The NFC is weak as it is, and they just dont need another team collapsing at the end of the season.
