Week 8 NCAA Football Recap

Joshua Huber (joshua.huber@sseonline.org)                             10/24/06
SSEOnline.org President and Senior Writer

I made some interesting observations this past weekend of college football action. I'd like to share a few with you:

Michigan State pulled off the biggest comeback in the history of NCAA D-1 football Saturday when trailing 38-3 at Northwestern, they rallied for 38 unanswered points in a quarter and a half. Winning 41-38 doesn't get the coach, John L Smith, off the hotseat yet, it just further fuels the fire of what this Spartan team is capable of, and at 4-4, things still look bleak for him. Michigan State does have game upcoming against Indiana, Purdue, and Minnesota before a tough matchup with Penn State. They could conceivably be heading into the final game with a 7-4 record. That would ultimately buy Smith 1 more year in East Lansing.

Ohio State cruised to a 44-3 victory over hapless Indiana, and are starting to put this machine into cruise control, heading into the final weeks before the great showdown with the Michigan Wolverines, who won 20-6 at Iowa, and held the Hawks to 41 yards total on the ground. This win moved Michigan to #2 in the BCS just released yesterday.

USC had their 2nd scheduled bye of the season, and they remain 6-0, but fall from #2 in the BCS to #3. Notre Dame defeated UCLA in the final seconds as Brady Quinn hooked up with Jeff Samardzija on a 45 yards TD pass to pull out a 20-17 stunner. The win moves ND to 6-1 on the season, and sets up a quite historical matchup with 5-2 Navy next weekend.

West Virginia's dangerous duo combined for 230 yards rushing, and were both over 100 yards for the second week in a row, as the Mountaineers blewout UConn 37-11. Steve Slaton rushed for 128 yards and Pat White added 102, and also threw for 156 yards and a touchdown. The Texas Longhorns have quietly been beating everyone in their paths since the Ohio State debacle, knocking off Nebraska with a last second fieldgoal Saturday 22-20, and moving to 7-1 on the year and staying unbeaten in the Big12.

Rutgers remains undefeated after knocking off 1-loss Pitt 20-10, sending their record to 7-0 with help of RB Ray Rice who ran for 225 yards on 39 carries. Watch out for this guy if the Scarlet Knights happen to knock off UConn next sunday.

Heisman Mention of the Week: Ray Rice, rb, Rutgers

Rice has rushed 201 times for 1, 124 yards and 12 touchdowns leading his Scarlet Knights to an undefeated 7-0 record, and coasting into the big matchups for the remainder of the season. He is projected to come close to the 2000 yards mark, and if he eclipses that, and the team is 10-1 or 11-0, he should win the Heisman.

Boston College hung on for a 24-19 win at Florida State, sending the Seminoles into a frustrated frenzy at 4-3, and dropping them to 2-3 in the conference. After the big win against Miami in week one, things looked nothing but up for FSU, but its been nothing but turmoil, and some boosters are calling for Bowden's head.

Wisconsin moved to 7-1 after flattening Purdue 24-3. Is this Badger defense this good, or did Purdue's offense just have a off day? Other winners include: Oklahoma 24-3 over Colorado, Boise State 42-26 over Idaho, Arkansas 38-3 over Ole Miss, Tennessee 16-13 over Bama, and Louisville 28-13 over Syracuse........

The SSEONLINE Top 10 Power Ratings:  (week 8)

1.Michigan 8-0) - The Michigan defense is starting to look way too good. ……..Next:  vs.Northwestern (2-6)

2. Ohio State (8-0) - Ohio State putting this season on cruise control, hopefully they hit the breaks in time for the game on nov 18th.……….Next:  vs. Minnesota (3-5)

3. USC (6-0) - They had another bye, how much rest does this team need?. ………Next:  at Oregon State (4-3)

4. West Virginia (7-0) - Slaton & White spell trouble for the rest of the WVU opponents (still) …….Next:  at Louisville (7-0) Nov 2nd

5. Texas (7-1) - Their only loss of course to Ohio State, they are ripping thru B12 opponents like string cheese, yummy (still)…….Next:  at Texas Tech (5-3)

6. Auburn (7-1) - played a recovery game as they call cupcakes now, beating Tulane 38-13..…….Next:  at Ole Miss (2-6)

7. Notre Dame (6-1) - Beat UCLA in the final seconds 20-17 …….Next:  at Navy (5-2)

8. Louisville (7-0) - squashed Syracuse 28-13 …..Next:  vs West Virginia (7-0)

9. Rutgers (7-0) - Somethings got to give in the BigEast, and this team will be one of the last 2 unbeatens in the conference …….Next: vs UCONN (3-4)

10.  Tennessee (6-1) -defeated a sound Bama squad 16-13.……Next:  at South Carolina (5-2)

Where is Florida, Cal, and Clemson?? I only have 10 spots, and Rutgers is very deserving of the Top10. Tennessee is just the better team right now.

Look for the following this weekend:

Michigan to annihilate Northwestern, there's about to be a collapse in Evanston.

Minnesota coming off a narrow victory over D1-AA North Dakota State, has to travel to #1 Ohio State. Ouch.

3 potential Top 10 upsets:

Oregon State over USC
Navy over Notre Dame
UConn over Rutgers
