Week 7 NCAA Football Recap

Joshua Huber (joshua.huber@sseonline.org)                             10/15/06
SSEOnline.org President and Senior Writer

(Sorry, I missed last weeks recap, but when ur doing everything by yourself, it's sorta hard on finding free time for bullshyt!)

This weeks college football came to a close as Miami Ohio knocked off Buffalo for their first win of the season 38-31, improving them to 1-6 on the season and 1-2 in the MAC, still a chance lingers for their MAC future.

Getting to the real action, Ohio State dominated a very depleted Michigan State Spartans squad 38-7. (MSU has 15 of their 22 opening day starters out with injury) Now if they had won this game, by this margin, with MSU at full strength, I would say they played like number 1, but the Mich State team you saw Saturday was no more talented than a mid-tier MAC squad, hey, such as Bowling Green. I don't wanna hear you Buckeye fans bragging about this one, because simply stated, you shouldve won by more.

Florida was defeated by the Auburn Tigers who for the 1st time this season was playing coming off a loss. The final score was 27-17, but the game was a virtual tie until the very last seconds. Both teams fought hard, and the Gators came up losing. Also, not to leave them out, the Vanderbilt Commodores pulled one of their biggest upsets ever, by knocking off Georgia 24-22, with a last second field goal. Now if you ask me, Georgia was entirely overrated to begin with. They were unbeaten until last week, when Tennessee throttled them 51-33, but in the few weeks leading to that matchup they had very close calls with a horrible Colorado squad, and Ole Miss, who is 2-5.

Next I will mention a team who I think will be in Glendale at the end of the year, based on schedule alone.....USC. The Trojans knocked off a pesky Arizona State team 28-21, for their 3rd close call in a row. We've all seen this before out of USC, they play to their competition, and just when you think they are not as good as they really are, they drop 60 points on a top 10 team. Do not doubt this football team. It may be easy to do that if you live in the midwest, but they will knock you off.

Michigan knocked off Penn State 17-10 Saturday, thus improving them to 7-0 on the year and #2 in the polls. But not the BCS poll which was released today with USC at #2. Michael Hart rushed for 112 yards, and Chad Henne threw for almost 200. Why is it that when Penn State plays a good team, their highly touted offense seises to show up? They layed eggs against Notre Dame (3 points until late in the game), Ohio State (6 total points), and Michigan (3 points until the last couple minutes). Paterno needs to coach these kids, and not pat them on the back and tell them, "We'll get'em next time."

Indiana knocked off ranked Iowa 31-28 for their biggest win in a long time. This one actually suprised me. I thought Iowa had simply had a bad game against Ohio State, but obviously there are question marks somewhere in the Hawkeye system if they are losing to lousy Indiana.

West Virginia toyed with, then ran away from Syracuse 41-17, literally. Mountaineer QB Pat White ran the ball 14 times for 235 yards and 3 touchdowns, while Steve Slaton rushed for 178 yards and 2 touchdowns. White also passed for 97 yards.

Weekly Heisman Mention: Steve Slaton, rb, West VA

Steve Slaton is this weeks SSE Heisman mention, because he is simply devastating. He has rushed for 931 yards and 8 touchdowns, and is on pace for a 1900 yard season. If he continues his trak, along with West VA's wins, he will definately be a major factor in the Downtown Athletic Club at the season's end.

The SSEONLINE Top 10 Power Ratings:  (week 7)

1.Michigan (7-0) - The UM faithful will love this one, but I call it like I see it, Michigan is the better team right now ……..Next:  vs. Iowa (5-2)

2. USC (6-0) - Go ahead and believe this team isn't that good, oh, believe me, they will be in Glendale.……….Next:  vs. Oregon State (3-3) oct 28th

3. Ohio State (7-0) - Most people have them #1, but not everyone. They haven't proved anything yet. If they beat Michigan they will have my vote. ………Next:  vs. Indiana (4-3)

4. West Virginia (6-0) - Slaton & White spell trouble for the rest of the WVU opponents …….Next:  at UCONN (3-3)

5. Texas (6-1) - Their only loss of course to Ohio State, they are ripping thru B12 opponents like string cheese, yummy …….Next:  at Nebraska (6-1)

6. Auburn (6-1) - Defense held very strong in the 2nd half, as the Tigers stole one from the Florida Gators.…….Next:  vs. Tulane (2-4)

7. Notre Dame (5-1) - This team had a bye. A good rest …….Next:  vs. UCLA (4-2)

8. Louisville (6-0) - maybe their 23-17 win over Cincy was their one hickup of the season …..Next:  at Syracuse (3-4)

9. California (6-1) - A very tough team, beating Wash St 21-3, defense is turning up the heat …….Next: vs Washington (4-3)

10.  Rutgers (6-0) - My new favorite underdog, this team hasn't been this good in my life.……Next:  at Pitt (6-1)

Where is Florida, Tennessee, and Clemson?? Well, Florida just lost to Auburn, Tenn, I believe would lose to any of the top 10 this week, and Clemson is in the ACC.

Look for the following this weekend:

Iowa to come out strong against Michigan, they aren't too fond off losing to Indiana.

Indiana to have a sense of confidence against the Ohio State Buckeyes, may not win, but play a strong game.

3 potential Top 10 upsets:

UCLA over Notre Dame
Iowa over Michigan
Indiana over Ohio State
