After a couple convincing wins most people had Michigan State tabbed to upset the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame in Spartan Stadium on Saturday night, and for 3 quarters the Spartans had. Notre Dame was beat, Charlie Weis was slapped by a phantom Spartan, and it all came crashing down with about 6 minutes left.
Michigan State led #12 Notre Dame by 16 points with just under 6 minutes remaining, and all of a sudden memories of Braylon Edwards and the Michigan Wolverines from 2004 start popping into MSU fans heads. Ouch, the Spartans managed to turn the ball over 3 times in the final half quarter, one interception returned for a touchdown to put ND over the top, and one to finish off a dismal day in Spartan land and send South Bend into a state of euphoria. 40-37 Notre Dame Final. Where does this lead for the MSU Spartans? Down a similar path most fans would rather not relive? Or does this game serve as a wake-up call to the Green and White, knowing they have Michigan and Ohio State 2 out of the next 3 weeks? We'll see.
Ohio State pulled off the big comeback victory 28-6 over Penn State at home, after trailing by a sloppy and inconsistent 3-0 at halftime. Between Joe Paterno running to the bathroom every 5 minutes and missed field goals and dropped passes, this game was quite a bore, until the 4th quarter. Ohio State exploded for 21 points and ended PSU's dreams of a win in Columbus.
Auburn, who for some reason had Bufalo scheduled for Saturday's game won big 38-7, and the game was indeed effectively over when they scheduled it. (#1 Ohio State still has yet to play awful Bowling Green later this year) Ben Tate rushed for 111 yards on 7 carries and scored twice, and the Tigers next have a date with always tough South Carolina.
USC, defensively manhandled the Arizona Wildcats 20-3 Saturday night, holding the Wildcats to -16 yards rushing. Jarrett left the game with an injured shoulder will be out 2-4 weeks, after putting the game in cruise control with a 3 yard TD reception.
Michigan overpowered Wisconsin 27-13, and game ball goes back to Mario Manningham, who caught 7 balls for 113 yards and 2 scores, giving him 5 in his last 2 games. UM didnt show up offensively in the 1st half, but provided the defense to keep in close enough to explode in the 2nd. They have Minnesota next.
Oklahoma had some oent up aggression to take out after last weeks debacle in Oregon, so who better than Middle Tennessee State to take it out on?? OU won 59-0 over MTSU in another one of those, "why are they scheduled?", games. Stars of the day? Adrian Peterson and Paul Thompson. The duo combined for six touchdowns and 381 yards.
